Vathsalya Child Development Centre (CDC)

Established in 2013, the Vathsalya Child Development Center (CDC) was created to support children of migrant laborers in Bangalore, ensuring they receive consistent and high-quality early childhood education. Our mission is to provide accessible, nurturing care for children from underserved communities, offering them the foundation they need to thrive.

The CDC offers a safe, engaging daycare environment where young children learn to read and write while enjoying nutritious meals, interactive games, and activities that enhance their motor skills and cognitive development. Our curriculum is designed to foster the holistic growth of each child, with a focus on essential life skills, values, and developmental milestones. We also host events throughout the year that encourage parent involvement, reinforcing values and growth at home.

Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) is critical for a child’s cognitive, emotional, and social development, with over 85% of brain development occurring before age six. Recognizing its importance, the National Policy on Education (NPE) 2020 emphasizes universal access to ECCE to bridge educational gaps. Vathsalya addresses this need by focusing on the holistic development of children aged 2-6, ensuring they receive quality care and education. Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), particularly Target 4.2, the organization advocates for inclusive, equitable, and quality early childhood development for all.

Going Beyond Through Partnerships

At Vathsalya, our teachers are trained to identify and address mild developmental challenges, such as speech delays. For moderate to severe challenges, we partner with specialized NGOs, such as the Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing and the Association of People with Disability. We also collaborate with Dr. Zamindar’s Microsurgical Eye Centre (ZMEC) for regular eye checkups and Dr. Dinakar’s Children’s Hospital, which offers free consultations to our children.

Impact

The Child Development Centre has changed the lives of numerous children over the years. A total of 16,815 children have been through the portals of this centre, growing and learning. The centre has provided meals for these children, nurturing their health and training their minds through quality education, offering a way for them to overcome the challenges of their backgrounds.

The team has worked tirelessly to encourage more families to send their children to school, fostering a community that seeks knowledge and education. Individual families have also been strengthened through supporting efforts like education sponsorship for children, financial aid to families in need, meeting needs in kind, and encouraging parent-child relationships and bonds through initiatives such as parent volunteership and special sessions.

Testimonials

We are grateful to hear stories of hope and transformation from those we’ve had the privilege to support on their journey.

As a social work trainee working with children, I've learned so much about the importance of building trust and creating a safe space for them to express themselves. It's been incredibly rewarding to see how small moments of connection can make a big difference in their lives. I've also realized how essential it is to approach each child with patience, empathy and cultural sensitivity. Some days are challenging, but it's clear that the work we do has a meaningful impact on their well-being. Overall, I’m grateful for this experience and excited to continue learning and growing in this field.

Working with children in CDC is both rewarding and challenging. Their energy, curiosity and creativity make every day unique and engaging. It requires patience, empathy and adaptability to meet their needs and guide their growth. Seeing their progress, whether in learning or social skills is incredibly fulfilling. However, it can also require strong communication and problem-solving skills. Ultimately, the joy of making a positive impact on their lives makes it all worthwhile.

I am very happy that my child is studying at the Child Development Center, Vathsalya Charitable Trust. The teachers take very good care of my child and all the children. We don’t have to worry about our jobs or paying fees because Vathsalya supports us during difficult times. The children receive healthy food and fruits. The center also follows a good system where parents sign the attendance sheet during pickup and drop-off to keep the children safe. I am very happy that my child gets to play and participate in programs.

Preetha Kumari Diya Hari's mother from Pupa

My daughter is studying very well and I believe the teachers at Vathsalya are the reason for it. She is learning well and gets healthy food at the center. Thank you very much for this. My elder child also studied here and is now receiving an education sponsorship. Thank you for that as well. She has improved a lot in her studies. I am very happy that I sent my children to a safe place like Vathsalya. During the COVID lockdown, we received rations from Vathsalya which helped our family survive. Vathsalya has been a great support and I feel it is a gift from God. My child enjoys games, sports and programs. Even during holidays, she is excited to go back to school.
